We often say something happens to somebody or something.
When that somebody or something is a noun,
but not the name of a person (non-personal name),
we have what we call pattern 3C.
Pattern 3C | Non-personal name | AY object-focus verb |
| Your mom | was helped by Charina at the market. |
| Ang iyong nanay | ay tinulungan ni Charina sa palengke. |
In the pattern definition above:
"Non-personal name" can be replaced by "one or more non-personal names."
"Object-focus verb" can be replaced by "one or more object-focus verbs."
Compare the different patterns:
3A Personal name | Charina was given a gift. |
3B Personal pronoun | We were not given gifts. |
3C Non-personal name | Mother was given the gift of music. |
3D Non-personal pronoun | It was given many gifts. |
